Questions about CBD, like what it is, how to use it, and how it may affect you? Check out our CBD 101 questions below.
We never want you to feel lost or confused when shopping for CBD. We compiled the following questions and answers to help guide you through your CBD journey, from the most basic questions like what is CBD to more complex topics like how CBD interacts with your nervous system or how it’s extracted from the hemp plant.
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s a non-intoxicating cannabinoid (yes, that’s a separate thing) produced by cannabis and hemp plants.
The word cannabinoid refers to any compound synthesized within the cannabis or hemp plant, like THC, CBD, CBG, and beyond. Scientists have identified dozens of different cannabinoids to date. You can learn more about cannabinoids on our sister site Leafly.com: A list of major cannabinoids and their effects.
Full spectrum CBD oil contains the full array of compounds produced by its sourced plant: CBD, a trace amount of THC, and other cannabinoids and terpenes (compounds that produce different aromas, like citrus or pine).
Broad spectrum CBD oil contains a wide array of the compounds, but THC is removed completely.
CBD isolate contains only CBD with all other compounds removed.
The wide variety of compounds found in full spectrum CBD oils make them popular among consumers wanting the full range of compounds included in the hemp plant. Broad spectrum CBD oil or CBD isolate, however, would be a good choice for those who want to avoid even trace amounts of THC.
The entourage effect, in relation to CBD, is a theory that describes how many components within the hemp plant—like cannabinoids and terpenes—interact with the human body together to produce a different or stronger influence than any one of those components by itself. You may experience the entourage effect with broad spectrum or full spectrum CBD, since those types contain other components. You will not experience the entourage effect with CBD isolate.
Hemp-derived CBD can be sold and shipped to all states except for Idaho, Iowa, and South Dakota. Check out this handy state-to-state chart for a full list of restrictions.
Leafly Market offers products that can be shipped nationwide, except to states that prohibit CBD sales. Currently that includes all states except Idaho, Iowa, and South Dakota.
The short answer is no. On its own, CBD is a non-intoxicating compound. Any CBD product you purchase on Leafly Market is required to contain 0.3% THC or less per serving. That trace amount will not result in any detectable intoxicating effects.
Depending on your serving, unique body chemistry, method of delivery, and the amount of THC present in the product, CBD can have a range of subtle effects including physical relaxation, relief, or a slight alerting or sedating effect.
CBD by itself is non-intoxicating, and a THC content of 0.3% or less by weight per serving will not result in a “high” feeling.
Early studies and anecdotal reports have shown that CBD appears to be well tolerated in the human body. However, it’s important to take caution of potential drug interactions and steer clear of products with vague or questionable ingredients. We recommend talking with your doctor before including CBD in your daily lifestyle.
It’s also important to note that the FDA has not evaluated claims made about CBD products in the market, and these products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any diseases.
Hemp plants contain 0.3% THC or less by weight, and cannabis plants contain more than 0.3% THC by weight. We only sell hemp-derived CBD on Leafly Market.
Unlike its cannabinoid cousin THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD (cannabidiol) is non-intoxicating and won’t cause a “high” feeling. All CBD products on Leafly Market contain 0.3% or less THC by weight per serving. If you’re looking for products with 0% THC, check for products labeled “CBD isolate” or “broad spectrum.”
There are different methods of CBD oil extraction, the two most common being superficial CO2 extraction and ethanol extraction.
CO2 extraction requires carbon dioxide to be transformed into its liquid state at temperatures below -69° and pressurized using a compressor, then passing it through the plant material. It’s followed by a lengthy purification process to remove co-extracted constituents, such as waxes and plant fats, from the extracted product.
Ethanol extraction involves running the solvent through the plant, taking the CBD from it. When the ethanol has evaporated, the CBD oil is left behind. Ethanol has been classified as “Generally Regarded as Safe” (aka GRAS) by the FDA and is already used in many common foods and medicines.
CBD affects the endocannabinoid system and interacts with a wide variety of other receptor systems in the body. This is the reason it is purported to have such a range of potential therapeutic benefits.
Brain receptors are not only sensitive to neurotransmitters produced naturally in the brain, like dopamine and serotonin, but also chemical messengers produced outside the body, such as plant cannabinoids like CBD. When these plant-derived compounds enter the body through the bloodstream, they can influence brain activity by interacting with receptors on neurons. But they don’t interact with all neurons, just the ones that have the appropriate receptors.
CBD is one of the many naturally occurring chemical compounds (also called cannabinoids) found in cannabis and hemp plants.
Yes. CBD in its pure form is a plant-derived compound free from gluten. However, it can be added to edible, drinkable, or topical products that contain gluten, dairy or other animal byproducts. Read product descriptions and labels carefully to ensure there’s nothing in the ingredients list you don’t want.
All CBD products on LeaflyMarket.com contain 0.3% or less THC by weight per serving. If you’re concerned about THC, look for products labeled as isolate or broad spectrum instead of full spectrum.
Although current studies have not shown CBD to be addictive, it’s important to note that the number of human studies conducted is extremely limited.
Because of the current lack of FDA regulations that set labeling standards and serving guidelines for CBD, purchasing products from reputable sources like Leafly Market that provide independent testing results is even more important. Broad spectrum and isolate CBD products are a good option for those who want to avoid even trace amounts of THC.
Even though CBD has not been shown to be addictive, individuals can still potentially develop unhealthy relationships with the substance based on a wide array of factors. At the end of the day, weighing the potential risks and benefits of CBD is up to individual discretion. You should always consult your healthcare provider if you’re looking to use CBD for health or illness, and to better understand how it may interact with other medications or other supplements you’re taking.
There are several delivery methods of CBD available: oil tinctures, capsules, topicals (lotions, balms, etc.), transdermal patches, vapes, edibles, and liquid beverages. You can shop by product type on Leafly Market.
CBD product labels include the total milligrams of CBD per package. All products on Leafly Market include the total amount of CBD in the package on the product page. A serving size is the amount of product manufacturers suggest you use in a single use.
For example: a tincture has a listed amount of 600mg per bottle, and 20mg of CBD per serving which equals 30 single servings.
It depends on several factors: method of consumption (tincture, topical, vapor, edible/oral), your individual biology, and the specific nature of your wellness needs. There is no universal serving size for CBD. Finding the “sweet spot” for your specific needs may take some trial and error. Look to the product label for direction on serving size. If the label doesn't include directions, we suggest starting with low servings.
A good place to start is our handy CBD finder quiz!
Finding the right delivery method of CBD depends on which wellness benefits you’re looking to address, your personal taste (are you sensitive to flavors and prefer capsules over drops?), and whether you’re looking to avoid even trace amounts of THC in your CBD products.
If you’re looking for targeted relief without CBD entering your bloodstream, a topical cream, ointment, or lotion is a good option. If you want to avoid THC, opt for products labeled broad spectrum or isolate. This will be labeled on each of our product pages.
Tinctures are produced by steeping hemp flowers or isolates in high-proof grain alcohol. It’s then applied to low heat for a significant span of time to allow the active compounds to infuse the neutral spirit, much of which is then boiled off. Tinctures can be added to food and beverages or taken sublingually (applied under the tongue).
We recommend storing your tinctures in a cool, dark place. Alcohol-based tinctures in dark glass vials should have a shelf life of anywhere from one to two years, depending on other ingredients added to the formula. The ingredient with the shortest shelf life determines a product’s overall shelf life. Check the product’s listed expiration date to ensure it’s within its effective shelf life.
Sublingual CBD oil tinctures should be held under the tongue for 30-60 seconds before swallowing.
CBD medical claims are currently not evaluated by the FDA. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease and you should always consult with your healthcare professional before taking CBD for any medical or health needs.
Everyone responds a little differently to CBD. If you’re trying CBD for the first time, we recommend tinctures or capsules. They’re easy to use, come in multiple concentrations, and allow for more precise serving sizes. They also may be more suitable to help elevate moods or assist with more restful sleep. Topicals like lotions, bath bombs, and gels, many of which contain other active ingredients like menthol and camphor, deliver more targeted relief and may help tired muscles relax and feel less achy.
If you’re a more seasoned user, you can opt for tinctures with higher concentrations. CBD vape pens are also a good option for those 21 and over, in states where vapes are legal. Keep in mind that CBD product claims are currently not evaluated by the FDA. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
At present, there haven’t been any large-scale clinical trials to inform serving size guidelines and CBD’s cumulative effects.
Most existing studies on CBD are preclinical and use animal models. However, more clinical studies using human participants are now emerging. Existing studies do suggest that CBD appears to be OK fore use and well tolerated.
Although interest in CBD continues to grow at a rapid pace, research around this compound has been lagging to keep up with the demand.
Most existing studies on CBD are preclinical and use animal models. More research is being conducted than ever before into how CBD works on its own and in relation to its other cannabinoid counterparts.
It highly depends on the serving size, the bioavailability of the CBD product you’re using, and your body’s metabolism.
Bioavailabilty refers to the degree and the rate at which a product is absorbed into the bloodstream. Different methods of consumption have different levels of bioavailability. For example, when CBD is ingested orally, it has to go through the gastrointestinal tract, then the liver, where it’s metabolized. When taken as a tincture or transdermal patch, CBD has a more direct route into the bloodstream, allowing it to be processed more quickly.
The effectiveness of any CBD product depends not only on the serving size, but the amount of bioactive CBD that actually enters the circulation after it’s taken. Vaping, sublingual tinctures, and transdermal patches provide a more direct route for the CBD to enter the bloodstream because it doesn’t have to pass through the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Topicals work differently by providing targeted relief by penetrating the skin without entering the bloodstream.
Topicals penetrate the skin to provide targeted relief, without entering the bloodstream. This is a great option for those who want to focus CBD’s beneficial properties on specific areas of their body rather than feel the effects throughout the whole body.
Topicals work best as part of a preventative wellness routine.
Yes! Hemp-infused cooking oils are an easy way to introduce CBD to your culinary world. You can also add a few drops of CBD oil to your favorite oils and butters and incorporate them to your salad dressings, smoothies, dips, and baked goods. Avoid adding CBD oil to direct heat as heating it too high can decrease its potential benefits.

Great question! We carefully evaluate and curate each brand and product we carry on Leafly Market to ensure it meets our standards. If you believe your product will meet our standards, please fill in your contact information within our form here: https://success.leafly.com/brands with relevant brand information. Our merchandise team will reach out if we think there’s an opportunity to sell your products.
Products marked as Leafly Certified have been lab-tested within our network of vetted lab partners. Not all testing labs have the same standards for quality and accuracy, which is why we carefully vetted and created our own network. These trusted labs test Leafly Certified products for overall CBD strength to ensure that they’re accurately labeled, and they test for heavy metals and pesticides, which is something most labs don’t do. Soil can contain heavy metal compounds like lead, mercury, and copper that hemp plants can absorb while growing, which is why we think it’s important to check that the products you consume don’t contain harmful levels of these compounds.
